Amadou Bagayoko, of the renowned Malian duo Amadou & Mariam, has passed away

Bamako, Mali – Mali and the world of music are in mourning. Amadou Bagoyoko, the male half of the legendary duo Amadou & Mariam, passed away this Friday, April 4, 2024, in Bamako at the age of 70 (correcting based on the year and implied age), leaving behind an invaluable musical legacy.
Together with his wife Mariam Doumbia, Amadou Bagoyoko formed a unique duo, Amadou & Mariam, whose music crossed continents. Both visually impaired, these Malian artists won over international audiences with their captivating fusion of Malian blues, rock, and various influences.
Their musical collaboration began in Bamako in the 1980s, but it was in the early 2000s that Amadou & Mariam’s fame exploded onto the global stage. Mariam’s warm voice, combined with Amadou’s distinctive and melodious guitar playing, created a signature sound recognizable worldwide.
Their landmark album, “Dimanche à Bamako” (2004), produced in collaboration with Manu Chao, was a true springboard, earning them a Victoire de la Musique award in 2005. They subsequently enriched their discography with acclaimed albums such as “Welcome to Mali” (2008) and “Folila” (2012), undertaking numerous prestigious collaborations.
Beyond their musical success, Amadou & Mariam embodied humanitarian commitment, becoming ambassadors for the World Food Programme. Their journey is a source of inspiration, and their music has always carried messages of unity and hope.
The passing of Amadou Bagoyoko is a tremendous loss for African and global music. His exceptional talent and cultural contribution will leave a lasting imprint on the history of music.
