Sankara Memorial in Burkina Faso: Census of Individuals to be Compensated Commences Today

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso – A crucial step towards the reconstruction of the Thomas Sankara Memorial has been announced by Maurice Konaté, President of the Special Delegation of the city of Ouagadougou. In a press release dated April 4, 2025, he informed of the imminent launch of an environmental and social impact assessment, an indispensable prerequisite for the works.
This in-depth study will aim to evaluate the environmental and social consequences of the reconstruction project. Particular attention will be paid to identifying the populations that could be affected by the works, especially those residing near the site where the memorial will be erected.
Specifically, a team of consultants will be deployed in the field from April 5 to April 30, 2025. During this period, they will conduct a comprehensive census of the individuals concerned by the project. In parallel, a precise inventory of the assets affected by the future works will be carried out.
A key piece of information was communicated by the Special Delegation: any installation or investment made on the site after April 5, 2025, will not be taken into consideration within the framework of the compensation process. This measure aims to avoid any attempt at abuse or speculation related to the project.
The press release specifies that the next phase will consist of the development of a resettlement and compensation action plan. This plan will aim to guarantee equitable support for the individuals impacted by the reconstruction of the Thomas Sankara Memorial. The objective is to minimize disruptions for the residents concerned and to ensure as smooth a transition as possible, respecting their rights and living conditions.
This announcement marks a significant step forward in the realization of the Thomas Sankara Memorial reconstruction project, an important place of remembrance for Burkina Faso and beyond. The process of census and compensation of residents represents an essential step to ensure that this emblematic project takes place under fair and equitable conditions for all stakeholders.
